Event Description

Literacy and Justice for All: The Right to Read Film Screening
In Partnership with the Hampton Roads Community Foundation and Norfolk State University

Join Collaborative Classroom, the Hampton Roads Community Foundation, Norfolk State University, and other literacy organizations for a special complimentary screening of the documentary film The Right to Read.

The event will begin with refreshments and networking among education advocates who are committed to increasing literacy for all of Virginia’s children. Then attendees will enjoy a screening of the awarding-winning documentary by executive producer LeVar Burton. This film shares the stories of an NAACP activist, a teacher, and two American families who fight to provide our youngest generation with the most foundational indicator of life-long success: the ability to read.

In addition to the screening, panel discussions with education and community advocates for literacy will explore the film’s message and its connections to the literacy work being done in Virginia communities.

We are excited to have special guest panelists Kareem Weaver, former educator and Oakland, CA activist, and Teresa Hunter, Virginia Beach parent and early childhood parent educator, who are both spotlighted in the film. Joining them will be Dr. Lisa Coons, Virginia State Superintendent of Education, alongside other local literacy advocates. The moderator will be the distinguished Rodney Jordan, Norfolk Public Schools Board Member.

Our hope is that this event will inspire, connect, and motivate attendees to continue their efforts toward ensuring every Virginian child has access to evidence-based literacy resources beginning at birth and beyond.
